wire biomass

Funding and professional services is required to accomplish the establishment of WIRE 3 Megawatt Bio-gas Power project. Research identified that there is a wide gap between supply and urgent demand for power in Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION
Biomass is Nigeria’s major energy potential. They account for about 80% of total primary energy potential in Nigeria. Biomass resources include agricultural, forest, urban, and other wastes.Biomass is yet to be explored maximally in Nigeria.
With the abundance of Biomass, Nigeria has tremendous potential to emerge as one of the leaders in Biomass power generation. In today’s climate of growing energy needs and increasing environmental concern, alternatives to the use of non-renewable and polluting fossil fuels have to be investigated. One such alternative is Biomass energy.

WIRE evaluated the potential for Biomass energy on Oke-Aro pig estate, Oke-Aro, Ogun State which is on a boundary between Lagos state (Nigeria’s economic hub) and Ogun State (image below). Oke-Aro pig farm estate which houses about 287,500 pigs collaborates with WIRE (MOU involved) as the beneficiary of animal dung generated on the farm site for WIRE renewable energy project.

PROJECT DETAILS

TECHNICAL PARTNER(S)

WIRE is looking at engaging potential technical partners who are manufacturers of Biogas and Power plants with experience in power projects in Nigeria and Abroad. Ongoing feasibility study have been initiated for the project.

MISSION

To undertake integrated bio-energy + agriculture project through optimal utilization of locally available biomass resource (pig dung/excreta) on Oke-Aro pig farm estate.

OBJECTIVE / COMPONENT(S)

Energy Component – Supply of 3-10MW of electricity from biogas power. Agricultural Component – Supply of liquid/solid best quality organic fertilizer

POTENTIAL OFF-TAKER(s) / TARGET MARKET
•Ministry of Agriculture (for fertilizer)

•Telecommunication base-stations (Oke-Aro and environ)

•Oke-Aro power substation ( grid)

•Oke-Aro community

PROJECT LOCATION

Oke-Aro ,for easy access and transportation of Biomass materials

THE BIOMASS POTENTIAL ON OKE-ARO PIG FARM ESTATE (SUSTAINABLE BIOMASS RESOURCE AVAILABILITY)

Oke-Aro pig farm estate has significant agricultural activity since 1992 with large number of pigs (287,500 pigs) expected to yield about 718 tonnes of pig dungs as biomass material daily. Looking at the history of Oke-Aro pig farm estate, one can conclude that pigs onsite tend to increase as investment in piggery business tend to increase. As investment in piggery increases, biomass generation increases.

Biomass potential remains strong on Oke-Aro pig estate as there is high tendency of investment in piggery and animal birth.

BIOMASS – ANAEROBIC DIGESTION – BIOGAS – POWER

There are several ways in which biomass can be converted to power.Considering the type of biomass material available for this project,ANAEROBIC DIGESTION (AD) is the required technique.Biogas produced from this process is used to fire the power plant while used substrate (by-product) is collected as best quality organic fertilizer due to no nutrient loss.

\

ANAEROBIC DIGESTION

Anaerobic digestion is the process of conversion of organic matter in the substrate (biomass) to biogas in the absence of oxygen. An airtight container called an Anaerobic Digester is used for this process conversion.ANAEROBIC DIGESTION – BIOGAS – POWER

\

BIOGAS

Biogas typically refers to a mixture of different gases produced by anaerobic digestion.Biogas usually contains from 45 to 70 % methane and from 30 to 45 % carbon dioxide. Depending on the source, biogas can also contain, e.g., nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide, halogenated compounds and organic silicon compounds as trace gases usually less than 5 %.

\

TECHNOLOGY SELECTION

Anaerobic Digester,Biogas gensets and other gas machines from reliable manufacturers will be adopted

\

THE ADVANTAGES OF BIOGAS POWER

Biogas is Eco-friendly.
Reduces soil and water pollution.
Produces organic fertilizer as bi-product
Its a simple and low cost technology that encourages a circular economy
• Healthy cooking alternatives for developing areas
• Profitability.
